June 10

Today was spent adjusting Steve's sedative levels in order to have him more awake (but not uncomfortable or agitated) in preparation for removing his breathing tube. They want him to be alert enough to follow some basic commands. They've also angled his bed so gravity can pull his abdomen downward slightly to give him more room to expand his lungs. They're planning to insert an additional drain tomorrow. Overall he's still making slow progress forward. Steve still has a fever and elevated white blood cell count, but neither are as high as previous days.

  1. Hi Gretchen, thanks for the updates. I came back from ASCO 2 days ago, and was thinking of Steve when I was in Chicago. Hang in there. He needs to get over this step and recover. Hopefully more therapies will be available as time goes on. My thoughts and prayers will be with you. -Wei

  2. Hi Gretchen- we just learned of your blog yesterday and have been looking
at the daily updates. We are familiar with this kind of surgery and can only say we wish Steve a great recovery. We know that this is a roller coaster for you and for Steve. All of us who know him and admire him (and who owe him so much) wish him the very best and send all of our love to both of you and your family.

  3. Hello Gretchen,
I just wanted to say thank you for the blog. I've been following Steve's progress every day. I am so grateful to hear he is showing signs of improvement. I've been his patient for eleven years. He's a great doctor. He has always done nothing but the best for me. I look forward to his recovery.

  4. Gretchen - Thank you SO much for the daily blog. I have been a patient for many years (in the office for over forty) and it is helpful to have updates.
Know that every day we have you and Stephen in our thoughts.
